Fauré's timeless Requiem is one of the most beloved of all the choral masterworks and unique among the great requiem masses-more compassionate than gloomy, more comforting than frightening. The Requiem is complemented by the Washington premiere of Proud Music of the Storm by American composer Carlyle Sharpe (based on a famous poem by Walt Whitman of the same name). The program opens with Brahms' Gesang der Parzen (Song of Fates), which, as with many of Brahms' choral works, expresses serenity in the face of loss and grief.
